Claypotts Castle

This tower house bears the dates 1569 and 1588, and was a seat of the Strachan family. Later it belonged to the celebrated John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee. It is still roofed and is a fine example of a fortified residence on the "three-stepped" or Z-plan, having a round tower at each of two diagonally opposite corners. These towers are corbelled out to form overhanging cap-houses in a remarkably picturesque manner. The ground floor of the castle is well provided with wide-mouthed gun-loops. Located three and a half miles east of Dundee, Scotland, at junction between A 92 and B 978.
