Castle of Old Wick

A ruined square tower of four unvaulted storeys, standing on a spine of rock projecting into the sea, between two deep narrow gulleys or geos, about one mile south of Wick. It belonged to the Cheynes, later to the Sutherlands of Duffus, and was besieged and taken by the Master of Caithness in 1569. The tower probably dates from the twelfth century. Located one mile south of Wick on the coast half a mile east of the main road.
