Balbirnie House

Balbirnie
House is a delightful Georgian mansion house dating back to 1777.
The house was commissioned by The Balfour family who had lived
on the site since 1642 in a previously existing house. The Balfours
were an influential agricultural and coal mining family from the
Fife area at the time who decided that it was time to create a
superior house to that which had originally sat on the site. Originally
designed by John Nisbet in 1777 and then extended by Robert Crichton
in 1815, the building is now listed Grade A of architectural and
historical importance and is most probably one of the largest
and earliest Grecian style houses to be built in Scotland.
